On July 6 we will launch into a new sermon series, featuring an essential element for every Christian. The English author G. K Chesterton once wrote, “An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.” The apostle Paul certainly showed by his life and ministry that he was on an adventure with God! Many times, he experienced an inconvenience but rightly considered it in light of God’s purpose for his life. In the book of Philippians, Paul wrote about some essential elements in the Christian journey. One of these elements is joy!
God desires that every believer experience great joy while following Him and serving others. Paul's ministry to the people of Philippi began on his second missionary journey. His time there was fruitful but not without difficulty. In fact, at the time of writing his letter to Philippi, Paul was a prisoner in Rome. But as we will see in the study of this book, Paul viewed his imprisonment as an “inconvenience rightly considered”. As a result, he left us with a portion of Scripture filled with encouragement to be joyful, active in spiritual growth, worshipful, and generous. As we explore Paul’s thank you letter to the Philippian church, we will discover joy for the journey!
