Bridges and Barriers
Once upon a time the mighty Fraser River was the highway for our valley. But with modern transportation, this once well-travelled waterway is now a barrier for travelers. For commuters living in the area of Ridge Meadows, that all changed in June 2016. The much anticipated Golden Ears Bridge was opened and made living and working between Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Langley much more feasible. The structure spans just over 2400 meters and is technically an extradosed bridge, the longest of its kind in North America. Featuring eagle sculptures at the top of four of its eight pylons, the Golden Ears Bridge links the Lougheed and Number One Highways, eliminating the barrier of the Fraser River for travelers in the area.
There is another far more incredible bridge. This is not a physical bridge spanning a river. Rather, it is a crossing of spiritual and eternal proportions. It is the bridge established by Jesus Christ across the chasm of sin which separates humanity from God. Jesus is our bridge to life! The Bible assures us that there is no one, no matter how righteous they appear, who can span this gulf. That is not to say that people do not try. Some attempt to earn standing with God by philanthropy. Others practice strict moral codes or follow rigorous religious rites. But as we ponder the pages of the Bible we learn that human efforts to reach God are as useless as trying to jump across the Fraser River.
A Spiritual Solution
Just as a bridge was needed over the Fraser River, God mercifully made a bridge, Jesus Christ, so we may cross from death to life! One Bible passage describes “crossing the bridge of Jesus” this way: “God has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13) Of course, a bridge is rather meaningless unless one crosses it.
I remember the first time I travelled over the Golden Ears Bridge. The crossing was quick and the view was amazing. At that time a toll was applied, but now the crossing is without cost. Now, imagine a commuter stopped on one side of the river, admiring the beauty of the bridge but unwilling to cross because they feel they should pay for the privilege! The same might be true for your spiritual journey. You can marvel at the message of Jesus. You might even “oooh” and “ahhh” at His exemplary life. But all that Jesus is and all that He has done will be of no benefit unless you go out onto the rescue bridge He has built. He sacrificed His life on the cross to pay the cost of rescuing you from death and give you new life.
Make The Crossing
Will you take Jesus as your bridge to life, by faith?
